5 Proven Ways to Measure Website Traffic For An Article

Measuring website traffic from an article is important and is necessary to know if your content is resonating with the right people. Measuring starts with tracking the right information about your website. No matter what you write, it is important to track the keywords used for the article.

The hard way to track is to use a manual process like a spreadsheet or using Google Search to track your keyword rankings. A better way is to use a tool to automate the whole process for you. The more data you track, the easier it is to know what to change and how to change it. Flying blind is the worst way to write content, as you will never truly know if the content is working. It does pay off to place a small investment in a tool. With a tool, you can scale and reach goals faster.

Before moving forward, start tracking the three areas below:

  • Track the keywords used for all your articles.
  • Know what you are trying to promote in each article.
  • Understand what kind of reader or customer you want to engage.

Visual Measuring

This method is the easiest and least effort. Answer these simple questions.

  • Does the article get comments?
  • Does the article get LIKES?
  • Is the article being shared with others?
  • Did you see it anywhere on social media? (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)
  • If you can see these things online or on your website, then you have an idea that the article is having some success.

You can get a high-level idea of how things work from a visual standpoint. This is the minimum you should be doing to measure. Yet as you read below, you will see other more powerful ways to monitor and take action.

Asking Your Mailing List

This works well if you already have a list and sending your articles to your list. Simply ask your readers if they like the content. Ask them how it can be improved. Is there something else you have not covered that they would like you to discuss? The feedback you get from your list is gold because it helps you refine your articles to the topics that matter most to your readers.

It is OK to talk about what you like from time to time, but most of your content should be focused on your reader’s interests. This will only change when you are ready to cover an entirely different topic. You will then ask your readers the same questions and refine the new content.

Google Analytics Approach

Those who want to know much more about their article’s success will want to start dabbling with software tools. The Google Analytics tool can tell you a lot about your article. It can tell you where in the world your readers are coming from. It can tell you how many people viewed your article. It can tell you if someone clicked on a link in your article and a lot more. It can tell you the gender and age of your readers. All this information can help you a lot.

The data you gather through the website traffic analysis will help you make the right decision. The data will help you discover and measure the data to focus more on a specific reader or customer versus an entire region or unfocused demographic of readers. Trying to write for all readers will get many readers that will not convert to paying customers or taking action on your giveaway.

What I don’t like about Google Analytics:

  • It is not very organized
  • It requires knowledge of how to configure and generate custom reports.
  • Some of the information you need is hidden or unobtainable.
  • This is why I abandoned Google Analytics and now use a tool called


The tool is my go-to tool. It is the only tool I use for all my SEO, content marketing, etc. It does everything that Google Analytics does and a whole lot more. Plus, it organizes everything in one place, so you don’t have to create custom reports and dig through data in multiple places before you can get the data you are looking for.

This tool takes traffic measuring and monitoring to a whole new level. It exposes:

  • Who is linking to your article?
  • What keywords are driving your traffic?
  • Estimated income based on the traffic.
  • Estimated traffic.
  • The geographic location of where your article is working in the world.

You will know what is working and how well it is working. Since you get a list of keywords you are ranking for, you can expand on that and write other articles based on that keyword list. You don’t need to do all the boring and exhaustive research hoping you picked the right topics and keywords to support your main pillar article. All the work is done for you already. Just choose a keyword not already used in your pillar article, and you are ready to create new content that will drive even more traffic to your website and capture more readers.

A great thing about ahrefs is that it is an all-in-one tool you can use to even go deeper into the keywords of choice. There is no better tool to help you create endless content topics. Next to Grammarly, this tool is one of my favorites.


This is a word that brings fear to any internet marketer. Too many backlinks and you can get flagged by Google. No backlinks, and you have a hard time getting visibility and ranking. There is a happy medium, but Google will not tell you how many backlinks you need. The great thing about good content is it builds backlinks for you on autopilot. Website owners, magazine sites, and news sites must link to and consume good content. When you create good, consumable content, others will find and link to it. When that happens, your traffic will start to increase. Depending on the size of the website that finds you, your traffic can explode overnight.

On a side note, traffic is inconsistent, so do not worry if you see small or even large dips in your traffic. Most of the time, your website will recover. More than not, the traffic dip is based on losing a front-page position on a heavily trafficked website. You should worry if you see a large dip with no recovery. That means you should check your website on Google console to ensure nothing is wrong.

Never pay for backlinks. It looks enticing but does not work out in the long run. Many of these websites position themselves as legitimate backlink generators are spammy, and built up with fake traffic and stats. This is against Google’s terms. Google’s algorithm is getting better and better at flagging even the most sophisticated backlinking software and companies. It is only a matter of time before your article or website is impacted or removed from the Google search engine. Allow your website to grow through natural backlinking.

If you do not want to wait for that to happen, then there are legitimate ways to get some solid recognition from other websites. Try to be a guest blogger for a Google news site or a magazine website. A lot of these legitimate companies are always looking for great content. If you have something they want, you can add your content, and most likely, they will allow you to add a link to your website.

What to Check when Traffic Dips

When traffic goes south, give it a few days to recover. Check on your keywords, you can normally see what keyword is causing the dip. Keyword ranking on Google is not consistent. You will never have a website always ranking for all its keywords. When the algorithm changes, you will see a dip in your traffic. Normally it is only down for a week or so, but if it does not recover, something is wrong.

Things to consider:

  • Review what changes occurred in the latest Google update. Did your website violate any of Google’s policies or rules? If you did, correct this and wait another week to see if your traffic returns.
  • Did you lose a backlink from a website that drives much reader traffic? If so, check the website and see if your article was removed or dropped to a subpage. Normally your article will not keep its front page status. These sites consume a lot of data and like to keep things current.
  • Did you drop a major keyword? Look at your keyword tracking tool (use ahrefs if you don’t have one). Is there one that dropped? If so, wait a week to see if it returns. Almost always, the keyword will return, and you will start ranking again.
  • Lastly, check on your Google Search Console. Sometimes there is an update to your website that can cause some pages to get blocked. Looking at the coverage tab will help you start troubleshooting the issue. Google does give you enough information to help you fix the issue. Once the issue is fixed, you can click on the fix button to tell Google to check the issue. If the issue is fixed, Google will place the article page in its queue to get it showing again.


When you Measure Website Traffic For An Article in this way, you can increase your traffic, refine your content to match your readers, and drive more conversions. Not all articles will work. Some may fail to drive any traffic, and that is OK.  Yet the better informed you are through measuring will limit the near misses and increase your wins.
